The system calls still exist, but it doesn't return a stable value. I can't remember what it returns - either dummy data or the same value for all machines. Either way it's not a reliable hardware metric.
My company’s software has been using 1Way for a few years. The 1Way system serves as a basis for our license-protection, but functionality was added to make my life a little easier. From the looks of your screenshot and feature list, you’ve already thought about most of the things we’ve added. We converted 1Way to use mysql on the server and built PHP scripts to allow support personnel to reset/revoke keys and check status and number of devices.
One of the key ingredients that you haven’t mentioned is activating software on computers that are isolated from the internet. We sell to various institutions that forbid their development computers (our software serves hardware developers) from ever touching the internet. Our 1Way-based system only needs activation once after installation, it doesn’t check with the server every time the software is used. To accommodate this, we created an online form where the user can enter the 1Way serial and the hardware id of the isolated computer. They use a smartphone, tablet, or another (connected) PC to do this.

The hardware id is displayed on the isolated machine when they select an “offline” option in the activation manager that we created. On the web server, 1Way accepts their information and returns an alternate serial that only works on the single machine on which they are activating. They enter the new key and the isolated machine is allowed to run our software perpetually. Our web server records one activation per the hardware id. This allows activation of isolated machines without our intervention. The users can accomplish this even if they can’t reach us immediately. It also serves as a work-around for activation failures caused by security software and external firewalls.
We allow normal, connected activations to be deactivated by the user in order to transport the software to a different machine. There can be no “offline” deactivation because our server would not be able to discern that the software was disabled on the isolated machine. How will you handle isolated computers with the new software? Is there a chance that a system similar to ours may be built in? Yes, the system will be able to handle this. Local variables have to be stored anyway, in case there is no online access. With the public-key encryption module, they will be stored in a small encrypted file.
You will be able to send this file to a user, so they can just place it on their computer to register the application. But in order to prevent this file being shared and used on other computers as well, you will need to get a DeviceID from the user first, so that it can in included in the encrypted file. Your application can show them the DeviceID, and ask them to enter it as part of the registration process.
On machines that do have internet access, there will also be a better way of doing this: When you generate a license, you will be able to specify that it should be allocated to the first machine that contacts the server with that license number. So the server-side application will generate the encrypted file regardless of whether the request comes directly from the user’s computer or from a http form where the user entered his key and device id, correct?
Yes, but the DeviceID is generated either within your application (using any method you like), or within the DLL (which can be checked for size and hash before loading). If the server request is then made via SSL (http) then it will be difficult to intercept or fake. Even if an external application does have a valid DeviceID for a license, and makes a request to the server, and gets back an encrypted file with authorization to run the program, it still won’t be any use. When your application (or the DLL) checks the values in the file it will also check that the DeviceID in the file matches the one generated from the machine. And the public-key encrypted file can’t be faked. And this function is platform independent?

It will run on a Linux web server equipped with the standard tools like Perl and PHP? The system we created requires a Windows web server because it must run the 1Way serial generator. Yes, it uses PHP and MySQL, so it will run on Windows or Linux, or any system that supports PHP and MySQL.
Hi, I've read in a few places this is supposed to be free, but not at all. I get prompted for a serial number, basically it doesn't let me export, when I do this I get: 'Don't worry, you can unlock all your express options for FREE by activating.' 'Click here to activate' Clicking here now brings up a dialog 'Hitfilm 4 Express' Activate & Unlock which - after logging in - now expects a serial to continue.
So I back out of this and choose the next option down 'Get a free license' - sounds reasonable - except this is a link to your homepage. Was this deliberate and did you never intend to let people use it for free? Yes, nothing there so far as I can see, only email I have from hitfilm.com is: Welcome to the HitFilm community. You've taken your first step into a larger world.

Which I have already clicked to activate. Anything else I should check? After going through the documentation I've found where the problems is - it could be that emails are simply not being sent out, can someone check this? According to this help here: It says: As Express is free to use, the first thing to do is activate your serial code, which you should have received when you signed up. No serial code has been received, what do?
Hi Roger, Sorry, the messaging isn't clear in our emails here, will sort that out. Most people don't actually need a serial code, because when you activate with your username and password 'online', we just look up the serial code from your account. Hence we stopped showing the serial code up front, as it only seemed to confuse people. The unfortunate side-effect is that if you do need a serial code, we've never told you where it is.
As Triem23 says, you can find those. Please ensure that you are logged into the same account (same email address) as you used when initially claiming Express. I hope this helps.
